Start this step with your dog standing in front of you, facing you. Use a wall or other physical barrier behind him to keep him from backing away from you; you should be just far enough away from the barrier to allow your dog to lie down without touching it. Kneel down in front of him so you don’t have to loom over him if he needs help lying down. It will be a little more awkward for you to help him lie down when the two of you are set up like this, so be sure he really does understand how to lie down beside you before you start this step to minimize the number of times you need to physically help him lie down when he is in front of you. Cue him to “Splat” while moving your hands as you did in Step 1 to help him lie down. You will have to bend over him when you do this, so be gentle and quiet while you help him. If he has thoroughly learned “Splat” at your side, you shouldn’t have to help him too many times before he starts lying down on his own in front of you. As soon as he is at least 80% reliable performing on cue while you are kneeling, start cueing the behavior while you are standing upright. Remember to always pair this cue with his release cue, and vary how long you wait before releasing him to keep him guessing how long he will have to hold his position. If he gets up before you’ve released him, immediately put him back into the down in the exact spot he chose to leave and start again. Start out asking him to hold his down for just a few seconds before giving your release cue, and gradually build up to longer periods of time as his understanding of the behavior improves.
